Applied Science is the study of the Science curriculum through the practical and vocational elements of the course.  This allows students to enhance their practical skills and learn about how Science works in context.

Key Stage 3 & 4 Overview

Level 2 BTEC First Award in Principles of Applied Science

This BTEC allows students to study Biology, Chemistry and Physics elements throughout the course.  This qualification is equivalent to one GCSE grade and consists of 4 units.

  • Unit 1 – Principles of Applied Science (25%)
  • Unit 2 – Chemistry and Our Earth (25%)
  • Unit 3 – Energy and Our Universe (25%)
  • Unit 4 – Biology and Our Environment (25%)

Post 16 Study

Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate in Applied Science

This course provides the opportunity for students to develop their science knowledge and further their Science investigation skills through the use of advanced equipment and techniques. BTEC Applied Science is equivalent to one A-Level qualification and consists of 4 units:

  • Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Science
  • Unit 2 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Unit 3 – Science Investigation Skills
  • Unit 10 – Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways
