2012 Science Show

February 1st, 2012

January 28th 2012 was a first for the Chemistry Department in LaganCollege.  Miss Wells and Miss Wightman teamed up with Armagh Planetarium, National Trust and Graham Construction to stage a family Science Show.

The Planetarium set up their Stardome in the hall and was able to present 11 shows throughout the day in addition to badge making and rocket making.  The weather was cold but dry so we were able to launch the rockets outside and the children were impressed at how high they went.

The National Trust set up several areas to showcase their work – parents and children were able to talk to representatives from Minnowburn, Patterson’s Spade Mill, Castleward and Rowallane.  There were interactive workshops and visitors could look down microscopes, see the wildlife that was found in the local area, examine rocks, taste locally produced honey, watch a spade being made and make a bughome.

Graham Construction set up a wonderful display showing their work not only on our new school but also other projects happening nationwide.  Children were able to don hard hats and high visibility vests to try to build a wall.

Miss Wightman, Mr McCann, Mr Carleton and nine eager 6th form volunteers kept the ‘bangs, flashes and explosions’ show going all day in the Chemistry department.  The smoke coming from the Science corridor certainly showed the visitors the right way to go.  Thank you especially to Andrew Bradley, Ryan McNanny, Gavin Ludlow, Lahanna Magee, Rebecca Gray, Rebecca Young, Louise Cassidy, Uroosa Mahmood and Jacqueline Livings who gave up their second Saturday in a row and put on a fantastic show.

The day was a fantastic success; we had 405 visitors to the College and are already planning the show for next year.

Thanks also to Mrs McNamee for her support throughout the project.

Year 10 Spag-Mall Challenge

January 29th, 2012

Lagan College host the Spag-Mall Challenge

On Friday 27th of January, sixty Year 10 students from Lagan College took part in the exciting Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge.  The task was organised by the school’s busy Mathematics department supported by Grahams Construction Company (currently completing the school’s new build programme).  Teams of students were challenged to build a structure around 30cm high using uncooked    spaghetti and marshmallows. At the completion of the task, pupils waited with baited breath as a weight was placed on top of each structure to test its strength.  Emer Murnaghan, a civil engineer from Grahams, talked to the students about the many interesting careers available to them involving civil engineering.  Emer and Derek Mooney, Head of the Mathematics Department, had the responsibility of jointly judging the structures.  Prizes and certificates were awarded to the best outcomes.  Pupils reported having a fun day!

STEM Module

December 20th, 2011

The STEM module was able to visit the college on Tuesday 20th December 2011.  Students from Yr 12, Yr 10 and Yr 9 were given the chance to be Forensic Scientists for the day.

Their task was to carry out tests to determine who killed Mr Chris P Bacon.  Mr Bacon was a local businessman who was proposing to build a waste incinerator in an area renowned for its natural beauty.  The suspects were:

Shirley Knot

Joe King

Felix Cited

Max E Mumm and

Miles A Head.

All the suspects claimed to have an alibi but also had a motive for the murder.

The students looked at evidence including footprints and fingerprints.  They then analysed fibres, white powder and blood found at the scene before concluding their tests with a urine analysis and discovering the identity of the killer.

Mr Strain’s class attend Maths Week lecture

November 19th, 2011

On 21st October students from Mr Strain’s Year 8 Maths class attended a MathsWeek lecture given by Matt Parker at the Girls’ Model school in Belfast. He gave a presentation on probability and the chances of various things happening in real-life. For example, the chance of winning the lottery is 0.00000715112%, but the probability of dying in the next year is 0.0432%. In actual fact, the probability of wining the lottery is the less than the probability of dying in the next 2 hours.

Lab Coats and Lace

November 10th, 2011

Yr 13 STEM students attended an event organised by Women in Technology and Science (WITS) to launch the book Lab Coats and Lace at QUB.

The book brings together the biographies of pioneering Irish female scientists. Our day included hearing contributions from women at various career stages working in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Computing, Engineering and Medical Biology.  Each speaker outlined their pathway into their chosen career, people who inspired them and challenges faced along the way.

The experiences of these current role models was interspersed with extracts from the book and the morning session then concluded with a question and answer session.  After lunch we had an enjoyable fun quiz which Lagan College of course won.
