BP Enterprising Science : Trading Challenge Roadshow

April 17th, 2012

The BP Trading Challenge roadshow visited the College on 16th April for an engaging and fast-paced work-related activity delivered by an energetic team of BP presenters. The roadshow offered students the opportunity to put mathematical and enterprise skills into action through an exciting simulation of real-life trading.

Students from Year 9 worked together in a fun, fast-paced team-orientated environment, competing against each other to trade oil and make a profit, demonstrating skills and values that can contribute towards success in business.

National Science Week at the University of Ulster Jordanstown

March 13th, 2012

10FRL went to UUJ on Monday 12th March with Miss Wells and Mr Carleton to kick start our week of events to celebrate National Science and Engineering week.

The students took part in a variety of short events showcasing the work of:

  • Air traffic controllers – how the skies above use are kept safe,
  • University of Ulster School of Engineering Clean Technology– how hydrogen could be used as a fuel of the future,
  • Pathologists – students had the opportunity to see a dissected cow’s heart,
  • University of Ulster School of Computing and Mathematics – how mobile phone technology is rapidly advancing,
  • G.I.S (Geographic Information System) – for tracking in air, land and sea,
  • Armagh Planetarium – students were able to examine a meteorite that is 50,000 years old and see how technology can help us map the sky,
  • B9 Energy – the largest wind farm contractor in theUKandIreland,
  • Sports Science – how science and technology can be used to enhance an athlete’s performance.

This was a great opportunity for the students to see a variety of STEM careers and engage with professionals from a wide range of STEM related jobs.

2012 Science Show

February 1st, 2012

January 28th 2012 was a first for the Chemistry Department in LaganCollege.  Miss Wells and Miss Wightman teamed up with Armagh Planetarium, National Trust and Graham Construction to stage a family Science Show.

The Planetarium set up their Stardome in the hall and was able to present 11 shows throughout the day in addition to badge making and rocket making.  The weather was cold but dry so we were able to launch the rockets outside and the children were impressed at how high they went.

The National Trust set up several areas to showcase their work – parents and children were able to talk to representatives from Minnowburn, Patterson’s Spade Mill, Castleward and Rowallane.  There were interactive workshops and visitors could look down microscopes, see the wildlife that was found in the local area, examine rocks, taste locally produced honey, watch a spade being made and make a bughome.

Graham Construction set up a wonderful display showing their work not only on our new school but also other projects happening nationwide.  Children were able to don hard hats and high visibility vests to try to build a wall.

Miss Wightman, Mr McCann, Mr Carleton and nine eager 6th form volunteers kept the ‘bangs, flashes and explosions’ show going all day in the Chemistry department.  The smoke coming from the Science corridor certainly showed the visitors the right way to go.  Thank you especially to Andrew Bradley, Ryan McNanny, Gavin Ludlow, Lahanna Magee, Rebecca Gray, Rebecca Young, Louise Cassidy, Uroosa Mahmood and Jacqueline Livings who gave up their second Saturday in a row and put on a fantastic show.

The day was a fantastic success; we had 405 visitors to the College and are already planning the show for next year.

Thanks also to Mrs McNamee for her support throughout the project.

Year 10 Spag-Mall Challenge

January 29th, 2012

Lagan College host the Spag-Mall Challenge

On Friday 27th of January, sixty Year 10 students from Lagan College took part in the exciting Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge.  The task was organised by the school’s busy Mathematics department supported by Grahams Construction Company (currently completing the school’s new build programme).  Teams of students were challenged to build a structure around 30cm high using uncooked    spaghetti and marshmallows. At the completion of the task, pupils waited with baited breath as a weight was placed on top of each structure to test its strength.  Emer Murnaghan, a civil engineer from Grahams, talked to the students about the many interesting careers available to them involving civil engineering.  Emer and Derek Mooney, Head of the Mathematics Department, had the responsibility of jointly judging the structures.  Prizes and certificates were awarded to the best outcomes.  Pupils reported having a fun day!

STEM Module

December 20th, 2011

The STEM module was able to visit the college on Tuesday 20th December 2011.  Students from Yr 12, Yr 10 and Yr 9 were given the chance to be Forensic Scientists for the day.

Their task was to carry out tests to determine who killed Mr Chris P Bacon.  Mr Bacon was a local businessman who was proposing to build a waste incinerator in an area renowned for its natural beauty.  The suspects were:

Shirley Knot

Joe King

Felix Cited

Max E Mumm and

Miles A Head.

All the suspects claimed to have an alibi but also had a motive for the murder.

The students looked at evidence including footprints and fingerprints.  They then analysed fibres, white powder and blood found at the scene before concluding their tests with a urine analysis and discovering the identity of the killer.
