Bronze Award Qualifying Expedition – Antrim Hills 25/26 June 2010

June 28th, 2010

Congratulations to the Magnificent 7 minus 1 (Gary, Aidan, Michael, Johnny, Mica & Nicola) and Clueless (Emma, Laura, Naina, Megan, Sophie, Kaitlin &Victoria)  on successfully completing their Bronze Qualifying Expedition.

On day one the teams made their way from the start point at Slemish mountain to an overnight camp at Lowtown farm.  A few detours (they seemed to really like Slemish and decided that it would be a  good idea to extend their route by completing a whole loop of the impressive feature) meant that both teams were walking for longer than they really should and were under pressure, on day two, to avoid navigational errors.  Day two was another fine day for walking and the teams made their way via Agnew’s Hill (and some excellent views) to their finish point at Sallagh Braes in good time, and to their relief, without any navigational errors.

The teams can be proud of their achievement and will hopefully look back on their expedition with fond memories, an appreciation of their home comforts and a sense of satisfaction.

Thanks to all the leaders who gave up their time helped out during the training and expeditions – Ms Rea, Miss Wightman & Mr Carleton

Bronze Award Practice – Mourne Mountains June 2010

June 15th, 2010

On a glorious Friday afternoon, Lagan’s Bronze Award teams (Clueless and the Magnificient 7) headed down to the Mournes to begin their two day practice expedition.  The route on the first day involved a walk along part of the Ulster way from Happy Valley, down the Trassey track and in through Tollymore forest to the Youth campsite.  The teams coped very well with their large packs and made it to the campsite in good time.  At camp they got their first opportunity to use the trangias and scratched their heads as they tried to remember how to put up their tents.  On day two, the route took the teams to a high point in Tollymore forest from where they crossed into Donard Wood and finally made their way to the waiting minibus in Donard car park.

Overall both teams did very well and finished their walk having gained valuable expedition experience and at the same time hopefully had good fun.

Bronze Expedition Training – Day Walk 1

May 31st, 2010

Lagan’s Bronze Award groups enjoyed their first day walk through Lagan Valley Regional Park, on what was probably the hottest day of the year so far.  The students divided themselves into two expedition groups and spent the day covering different aspects of their expedition training which included:  map skills, compass work, tent pitching and use of the trangia. Thanks to Miss Wightman, Mr Carleton and Norma for their help with the training.
