Bronze Practice Mournes – May 2011

May 16th, 2011

Well Done to all the students who took part in the Bronze Practice Expedition at the weekend.  The weather was very changeable with bright spells and heavy showers.  Indeed as the coach approached the start point there was a major downpour and the teams had to get waterproofs on and get under way ASAP.  They made good process on Friday, with the ’Musketeers’ making only a minor detour, and had tents up by late afternoon.

After  a wake up call from Mr Carleton and Mr Ewart the team got their gear packed in good time and headed off on their route.  One team enjoyed Tollymore forest so much they didn’t want to leave and the other three teams appeared in Donard car park in good time and in great spirits.  Their timing couldn’t have been better as shortly after boarding the bus, to return to Belfast, the heavens opened.

The practice expedition was a great learning experience for the students and hopefully they will apply their new found knowledge and skills on their Qualifying Expedition in June.

Thanks to Ms Wightman, Ms Fairley and Mr Carleton for their assistance during the expedition.

Bronze Award Qualifying Expedition – Antrim Hills 25/26 June 2010

June 30th, 2010

Congratulations to the Magnificent 7 minus 1 (Gary, Aidan, Michael, Johnny, Mica & Nicola) and Clueless (Emma, Laura, Naina, Megan, Sophie, Kaitlin &Victoria) on successfully completing their Bronze Qualifying Expedition.

On day one the teams made their way from the start point at Slemish mountain to an overnight camp at Lowtown farm.  A few detours (they seemed to really like Slemish and decided that it would be a good idea to extend their route by completing a whole loop of the impressive feature) meant that both teams were walking for longer than they really should and were under pressure, on day two, to avoid navigational errors. Day two was another fine day for walking and the teams made their way via Agnew’s Hill (and some excellent views) to their finish point at Sallagh Braes in good time, and to their relief, without any navigational errors.

The teams can be proud of their achievement and will hopefully look back on their expedition with fond memories, an appreciation of their home comforts and a sense of satisfaction.

Thanks to all the leaders who gave up their time helped out during the training and expeditions – Ms Rea, Miss Wightman & Mr Carleton
