9/11 Education Programme and Schools Competition
Help your students learn about 9/11 and related events in five curriculum subjects

The 9/11 London Project is offering students the chance to win a trip to New York this September (8-12th), which will include a visit to the 9/11 Memorial. The winner in each category and the two runners-up will all win a trip to New York for the 11th anniversary. In addition each of the two category winners will receive £1000, plus an additional £1000 for the two winners’ schools.

A Star Future for students studying abroad

March 16th, 2012

In the current economic climate, many students are turning to universities in Europe as an alternative to rising fees in UK universities, and to add a global dimension to their higher education experience.  If you are interested in going to a European University but don’t know where to start, have a look at the new A Star Future website.

It gives information on:-

  • degrees taught entirely in English in European Universities
  • information on tuition fees for all degrees
  • selected information on degrees in Australia, Canada and Ireland
  • the opportunity to request information on all degrees
  • information on higher education throughout Europe and further afield
To reflect the growing interest in Dutch Universities, another website http://www.dutchopendays.com/  has been launched.  It lists information on the forthcoming open days at 18 Dutch Universities.
You can also find information at www.studyinholland.co.uk which gives information on student finance, the application process and courses available in English at the universities in the Netherlands.

Y11 Work Experience Update – Where do I get the forms I’m being asked for by my placement employer?

March 8th, 2012

Once you have your placement details, please make sure you enter your details into the form below.

Link to the form

When your details have been entered into the form, they will be processed and you will receive a white envelope containing your indemnity forms (insurance forms).  This may take up to one week.  Many of you are asking for these forms, but you will only receive them when your placement has been entered into the system.  The first set of forms will be distributed to Y11 form teachers on Monday 12th March.

Please take these forms personally to your employer and ask them to complete them.  DO NOT POST THEM as they often get lost in the employer’s systems and are sometimes not returned.   Take them to your employer and get them filled in while you are there, or call back and collect them the next day.  You cannot go on your placement unless these forms are filled in.

These forms should then be returned TO THE OFFICE by you.  Make sure you hand your forms to one of the ladies in the Office and ask them to file them for you. DO NOT PUT IT THROUGH THE WINDOW WITHOUT TELLING ANYONE.

You will be given a copy of your employer schedule closer to the time of your placement (this will contain details of your hours, dress code, lunch arrangements, special arrangements,  etc.).

All of these processes will be explained in your Friday afternoon careers seminars.  If you are unsure, check with your form tutor or Mrs Evans/Mrs Bingham.

University Lectures for Secondary Schools

New titles just uploaded

The Faculties is building a library of free, short films of university lecturers speaking on topics directly from the A-level/IB curriculum. This is a stretch and challenge resource intended to help students excel in their assessments, to inspire deeper learning and smooth the transition from school to university. In addition to the films, there are also resources to help students chose a university programme and think about the careers might follow their degree.

The site was launched a month ago and we have already had more than 60,000 page views from over 14,000 unique users. 85% of teachers who have accessed the site say they will use the videos in their teaching.  Have YOU seen our resources?

We now have approximately 360 podcasts across our six websites, including over 100 that were uploaded in the last few days. For example:

www.TheMathsFaculty.org

Implicit Differentiation, Dr. Margit Messmer

www.TheEnglishFaculty.org

Are Traditional Texts Always What They Seem? Dickens’ Great Expectations, Dr. Simon Swift

www.TheBiologyFaculty.org

How do Enzyme Inhibitors Work? Dr. Lars Jeuken

www.TheChemistryFaculty.org

Entropy, Dr. Marcelo Miranda

www.TheHistoryFaculty.org

The Extended Essay: How to Conduct an Historical Investigation, Dr. Chris Prior

www.ThePsychologyFaculty.org

Experimental Cognitive Psychology, Dr. Gjisbert Stoet

And many, many more.
